Thurlstone Brass Band

About the Band

Thurlstone Brass Band was formed in 1854 as the Millhouse Musical Society and it originally comprised of both wood and brass instruments players. Over time though, the band eventually became based on traditional brass band instruments.

In terms of activities, the band has maintained our central aim of performing in public as often as possible, providing a target for all players. Our repertoire has grown from more traditional pieces to a range that spans traditional brass band music to arrangements of contemporary music, aiming to give enjoyment to players and audiences of all ages. The band performs a great deal around the local area and our events page further illustrates our public performances.

We have also embraced competition as an unregistered band competing where an appropriate section is available with considerable success. The band returned to the Test Piece Contest stage after 40 years in 2017, winning their section at the Holmfirth Contest. We have also consistently won "Best Unregistered Band" prizes at various contests!

Over the years, we have performed at various venues, producing programmes of music suitable for many audiences. Highlights include concerts at the Lamproom Theatre, the Paramount Theatre with an organist, and participation in local events like "Yummy Fest" in Ingbirchworth. More recently, the band has embarked on international tours, including trips to Belgium in 2018, Holland in 2021 and at the French Open in Amboise in 2024!

We actively support our local community by appearing at events like Remembrance Parades and local galas. The band also organises various fundraising events and enjoys a vibrant social aspect with events like band dinners, ten-pin bowling and curry nights. We have even been involved in unique performances such as a couple of week-long runs of "Brassed Off" in Barnsley's Lamproom Theatre.

The aims of Thurlstone Brass Band have evolved whilst retaining the core purpose of public performances. A significant aim is to provide enjoyment to all ages of players and audiences alike through a varied repertoire. Beyond musical performance, the band prioritises a fantastic, friendly atmosphere, described as having "mixed abilities and no egos" and being a "great example of social banding". The band prides itself on its community spirit, welcoming anyone to contribute ideas and appreciating the diverse musical experience within the group. We aim to be well-organised without the pressure of mainstream contesting bands, fostering an ethos of fun, friendship, and encouragement. The band's commitment to the community is evident in our regular appearances at local events and our support for community initiatives.
